Charles William Ellison, well known pioneer resident of Newberg, died at his home at 205 north Main street Saturday afternoon, July 23, after an illness of more than a year. He was 79 years and 23 days old.
Son of Larkin T. Ellison and Nancy Cummings Ellison, he was born in Mercer county, West Virginia, on July 1, 1853. When he was 12 years old his parents moved with him to Oregon, settling in this part of the state, where they lived for several years. In 1871 they moved to southern Oregon where they lived for about ten years.
He had the honor to take part in the Indian war at Klamath in the early '70s. In 1881 he was married to Miss Elizabeth Bevert at Sherwood, Ore. This union, however, was broken by the death of his wife shortly after their marriage. He was a farmer, but retired from his occupation about 20 years ago and since then has lived in this vicinity, during which time he has made a great number of close friends and acquaintances.
He leaves to mourn his death, three sisters, Mrs. D. A. Hagey of Newberg, Mrs. Sallie Lewis of Sherwood, and Mrs. M. A. Ashpole of Medford, and one brother, O. A. Ellison of Concil Bluffs, Ia. Many other nieces, nephews, other relatives, and a host of friends join with brother and sisters in mourning his departure.
Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday from the Hollingsworth chapel with Rev. Elery Parrish, pastor of the local Christian church, in charge of services. Burial was made in Pleasant Hill cemetery.
